How we became farmers

Although neither is from an agricultural background, Steve and Lynda quickly developed an appreciation and affection for their land and community. Not knowing what the best use for their land might be, they asked friends and neighbors, some of who had been living and farming in Sonoma County for generations. One person deserves special mention; Perry Kozlowski, of Kozlowski Family Farms. A good friend, good neighbor, and source of wise counsel, it was Perry who pointed out that you can grow apples in 48 states but Sonoma County is one of the few places in the world you can grow premium wine grapes.
Taking Perry’s advice Steve went on a crash course to learn about viticulture and winemaking. He quickly learned one of the great things about the wine industry; other growers, winemakers, and wineries were eager to share their knowledge and happy to help. It was during the process of learning and networking that Steve met vineyard developer Eric Neil. Eric, working with Steve and Lynda, developed Kanzler Vineyard, and maintains it to this day. In large part, the success of the vineyard is due to these good people.
Vineyard owners, Steve and Lynda Kanzler built a house in the middle of Kanzler Vineyard and spent many happy years living there before passing the house on to the next generation, daughter Melissa Kanzler Grant, husband James and granddaughter Georgia. The Kanzlers treat their vines with loving care and strive to be good stewards of the land and the environment, believing what makes for a great place to live also produces the highest quality grapes.
Because of the high demand, Kanzler Vineyards Pinot Noir is tightly allocated and only members of our mailing list can purchase wine directly from the winery. If you are interested in purchasing our wines, click here.
